Important Changes to the USEF Therapeutic Drug Rule Regarding NSAIDs From the USEF Equine Drugs and Medication Program-At this year’s USEF Annual Meeting held January 13-17, 2010, an important rule change was approved affecting the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in competition horses. Over the years, ongoing veterinary research has revealed that not only is there little or no benefit to administering more than one NSAID to a horse for most medical concerns, it can actually cause potentially harmful, even severe side effects.

Change in Dog policy at KHP for 2010 - As many of you are aware, the KHP had previously been instructed by the USDA to prohibit dogs on park grounds from July 1, 2010 – until October 19, 2010.  Due to a change in the schedule and planning of the Piroplasmosis strategy, this deadline has changed to September 9, 2010 – October 16, 2010.  Please take note that KHP will welcome dogs until September 9, 2010.  This is good news for all!

Important Information about the Kentucky Horse- Please be advised the Kentucky Dept. of Agriculture has changed their regulations regarding horses shipping into Kentucky from Texas.  Texas has been affected by the detection of Equine Piroplasmosis in several counties which has caused increased regulation regarding the transport of horses from this state.  Currently, and until further notice, horses arriving to Kentucky and the Park for shows and events from Texas will be required to test negative for “Piro” (Equine Piroplasmosis/T. equigenitalis).  Any horses arriving from Texas without a negative test will be denied entry.  All other requirements remain the same in regard to EIA (coggins) and health certificates.
